Liza Wajong Past President & External Relations

Immigrant journey has always its struggle and challenges, but we also know that it is rewarding at the end. Liza & Bhakti started their immigrant journey in 1999. She came to Canada with over 10 years experience of working in various national and multi-national companies in Jakarta. Graduated from Tarakanita Secretarial Academy and has a stint of schooling in Japanese Literature in University of Indonesia, she has worked with Bank Duta as Frontline Trainer, IBM Indonesia and Mattel Indonesia.

Her involvement in Indonesian Canadian community started in 2004 when she took part as team member in Tsunami Relief Effort Task Force with Indonesian Consulate in Vancouver. After that, her journey in re-cultivating the Indonesian Association of BC (PERMAI-BC) has started with the new team. She has been a significant part in making many events happen for the community and will continue to do so in the future. This time, she would like to seek more participation from communities from South East Asian countries as, perhaps you all know, that in the year 2020, the South East Asian countries will be united. One significant event that PERMAI-BC has been quite influential was when we organized the SEA Community Leaders Gathering with KJRI Vancouver in February 2010 with the support from Vancouver Asian Heritage Month Society and Vancouver Multicultural Society. She believes that the doors will start to open for more opportunities in working together with these communities.

One of her goals in Canada is to share the beauty of Indonesian culture and she chose to concentrate her interest in Indonesian Textiles: Batik & Weaving. It has given her many pleasures in appreciating its philosophy and slow methods. She has started some collections of the textiles and would like to meet other Indonesian textile enthusiasts to talk of the possibility of having textile exhibition together.

Liza lives with her husband of 16 years, Bhaktianto Widyarso and 2 daughters, Lupita & Mentari, in New Westminster, BC.
